Halloween is over and you know what that means. Christmas is here. That’s what the retailers are telling us and I believe them. I usually go between being in denial that Christmas is coming and being frantic because Christmas is coming. This year I intend to go with the flow and take some time over the next several weeks to wander the shops in the neighborhood. I am making a pledge to do all of my holiday shopping at local shops.
My husband bought a computer about a month ago. Until then he was almost a computer. The pendulum has swung the other direction and now he carries his computer with him. Never in my life have a seen someone go from one place to another so completely. I expect he will be doing much of his Christmas shopping online unless I can direct him otherwise. He’s not alone. Many people shop online because it is quick and easy. Push a few buttons and you’re done.
Given the past year, everyone is also trying to squeeze a nickel. You might be able to get some good deals online, but I’ll bet if you take some time now before the season carries us away and visit your local shops, you will find some very good deals. Shop close to home. Support your neighbor’s business. If we all help each other, next year could be better for all of us.
There have been a few shops close in town this year. It’s not surprising considering the state of the economy. But it is very disappointing to go to what used to be a favorite store only to find an empty storefront. The only way small businesses can stay open is if we help them.
Another way to shop locally is to go to some of the dozens of church bazaars and fall festivals being held every weekend for the next several weeks. You can get some beautiful handmade items at a fraction of the cost you would pay someplace else.
Try something different this year and give gift certificates to local restaurants. Mom won’t have to cook and the restaurants can keep their doors open. Thanksgiving always gets the short end of the stick with hardly a mention between Halloween and Christmas. Make Thanksgiving even more special this year by getting the pumpkin pie at your local bakery, the wine from someplace like Adam’s Vineyard or flowers from the flower shop on the corner. Better yet, have the entire meal catered by a local restaurant. Order dinner, pick it up and serve it on your best china. Everyone will love it and you won’t be worn out from cooking for days.
Everyone is in a hurry and we buy at the big box stores or online because it is one-stop shopping. Make this year different. Slow things down, plan ahead and take the time to shop at the local small businesses. You might be surprised at the holiday treasures you’ll find.
